Is your Shopify store agent-ready? Check it free

A Shopify store gets two answers. For shopping agents using UCP, Shopify's own agent protocol, every store is already live. For a person's agent using the Personal Agent Protocol, a Shopify-hosted storefront cannot publish /.well-known/poppy.json by itself: the platform answers that whole folder with its own 404.

What the check usually finds on Shopify

Found
Shopify's default robots.txt allows the assistants; stores that edited robots.txt.liquid to block AI crawlers sometimes block the assistants too.
Understood
Shopify themes print Organization, WebSite and Product JSON-LD, so most stores score well here. llms.txt is rare.
Usable
No poppy.json (platform 404), so the Usable pillar comes only from UCP's partial credit: shopping agents can browse and build a cart, but no agent can act on a customer's account.
Trusted
Nothing: UCP has no customer sign-in, revocation or operations for a person's agent.

What you can do

  1. 1

    Let assistants in through robots.txt

Edit robots.txt.liquid in the theme (Online Store → Themes → Edit code → Templates). Allow ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and Perplexity-User (they fetch a page only when a person asks) and the AI search bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot). Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or CCBot is a separate choice and costs no points.

  2. 2

The protocol part: a hosted Company

Shopify answers every /.well-known/ path itself and no theme, redirect or app can change that (checked on live stores, 12 October 2026). A store with Cloudflare in front can serve that one path from a hosted provider with a Worker on the store's own domain; Shopify supports this orange-to-orange setup. A redirect to the provider's host no longer counts (spec §3, changed 16 October 2026). Agent Adapt is building a hosted Company for sites that cannot run its WordPress plugin: it publishes poppy.json, runs the sign-in and the customer API, and the document is served on the site's own domain through a small proxy (the spec stopped allowing a redirect to the provider's host on 16 October 2026). It is not yet on sale.

  3. 3

    Publish llms.txt

A short Markdown page at /llms.txt naming the business, what it sells, its delivery and returns policies, and the pages that matter. Most platforms can serve a plain-text file at the root; where one cannot, a redirect to a page you host elsewhere works.

Common questions

›My store already works with ChatGPT shopping. Why isn't it agent-ready?

Shopping through UCP lets an agent find products and build a cart. The Personal Agent Protocol adds what UCP doesn't: the customer signing in through their agent, seeing their orders, and cancelling, returning or changing an address, all under their own consent. The check scores both.

›Can an app publish poppy.json for me?

No. App proxies live under /apps, /a, /community and /tools only, and Shopify's URL redirects don't apply to /.well-known/. We found no documented way for an app to serve a file there.

›Will Shopify adopt the Personal Agent Protocol?

Shopify was named as a launch partner when the protocol was announced on 6 October 2026, with no announced plans. If it does, every store would pass discovery for free.
